We are proud of our children at Gilnow and the way that they develop as responsible role models as they progress through school.
In Year 6, children have the opportunity to apply to be a member of our Pupil Leadership Team, which includes Head Pupils, House Captains, Eco Leaders, Librarians, Sports Leaders and Monitors. These children work with adults and children across school to lead and develop elements of our provision.

From Year 2 onwards, we vote for members of our School Council (building on our Gilnow value of democracy) and these children work with Mr Taylor and Ms Green to promote pupil voice and put ideas forward for school improvement. We also elect members to our Eco Council to work with Mrs Crook to raise awareness of climate change and help to care for and improve the environment within school and our local community.
Gilnow School Council
Last year, the school council was focusing on supporting the mental health of everyone in our school. They created wellbeing charts that are still on display in every classroom, and they ran a quiet space during lunchtimes, to provide an escape for anyone feeling overwhelmed.
This year, the school council’s focus has switched to celebrating the different cultures and beliefs present in our school. In the Autumn term, they did some work to support the charity Walk2Water to help to provide clean water to people all over the world. In the Spring and Summer, they will be organising more events such as PenPal projects and culture days to help everyone to appreciate the diverse range of cultures we have in our school.
Gilnow Eco Council
We are excited to announce that, in July, we were awarded Eco Schools status! As a school, we continue to be passionate about living sustainably and empowering children and the community to tackle the climate crisis.
Gilnow Eco Council will help to decide and deliver eco projects to make our school more sustainable, increase environmental learning and benefit the community. We are united in the cause to make more eco-friendly decisions for our school and local community. This year, Eco Council will continue litter picking in the local area and they will open the Gilnow Eco Refill Shop once a month. Eco Council will continue to explore how the school can reduce plastic waste and alongside Gardening Club, will begin work planting and developing our Eco Garden.
