Our PSHE Leader is Miss Williams. She is the SENCo and a member of the Senior Leadership Team and is supported in leading Pastoral Support and Children’s Mental Health by Miss Hesketh, the Headteacher.
Curriculum Intent
At Gilnow, we endeavour to deliver a personalised PHSE curriculum, which will engage, inspire and promote wellbeing through all subjects. In accordance with the National Curriculum and PHSE Association we intend to,
- Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all our pupils and
- Prepare pupils at the school for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
PHSE is fundamentally at the centre of all our pupils’ development. It is taught through specific lessons, assemblies, visitors and life experiences. The pupils will be given opportunities to build foundations and increase their knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity and personal development.
We believe that children should meet positive role models from all parts of society, be given the opportunity to share their pupil voice and build their resilience, self-belief and perseverance. Our pupils are also encouraged to raise their expectations when aiming for success and their future aspirations.
Curriculum Implementation
Gilnow PHSE curriculum covers all statutory requirements including Relationships and Health Education. Statutory guidance for schools to deliver RSE came into effect in September 2020. We deliver RSE in a sensitive manner and our materials can be viewed by parents upon request. Our PSHE curriculum also covers British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development and runs alongside our safeguarding procedures.
We believe that relationships education is important for our pupils and our school as it helps children and young people to be safe, healthy and happy as they grow up and in their future lives.
In our school, we include the wider aspects of sex education at a level appropriate to pupils’ age and stage of development as recommended by the DfE, PSHE Association and approved by our governing board. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from this aspect of their learning. At Glinow, our PHSE curriculum is delivered through:
- Discrete timetabled lessons
- School Events- It is important to have whole school approaches e.g. Mental Health awareness Days
- Assembly themes – equality, antibullying, relationships.
- Cross curricular teaching – The Royal family and the Kings Coronation for British Values
Our pastoral team will also work with children on a 1:1 or small group basis on identified needs. Our PHSE curriculum is inclusive to all our students.
Curriculum Impact
Through the school ethos, high standards and comprehensive PSHE curriculum, children at Gilnow learn to become reflective, thoughtful and tolerant members of society, who have the skills to deal with the ups and downs of life. This is measured through:
- Learning walks
- Lesson observation and feedback
- Book looks
- Pupil voice conversations
- Staff meeting training and discussion
- Termly summative assessments
