Curriculum Intent
At Gilnow, we strive to deliver an Arts curriculum that is rich, broad and balanced, demonstrating progress in skills across school. We want to sow the seeds of creativity, inspiration and invention in our children- providing them with the opportunity to engage and challenge themselves in experiencing the richness of the Arts. At Gilnow, we believe our children should have the liberty to become independent, critical thinkers and develop a deep understanding of the arts. As holistic learners, we want them to be able to use their skills and knowledge to open many doors of possibility for their futures, hence contributing to the culture and creativeness of our society. Our nation is affiliated with people of all backgrounds, colour and religion; hence, we believe our children should possess the knowledge and understanding of artists from all backgrounds, colour and religion, to inspire their own work.
Curriculum Implementation
The skills and knowledge that children will develop across each art topic are formed from the National Curriculum. They are systemised across each year group and are cumulative throughout the school. As artists, we want our children to use all elements of art such as, line, shape, pattern, colour, texture and form, capably, in order to express emotion, individuality and new ideas. We want them to be confident, daring and investigative in communicating their ideas in both a visual and tangible form. Therefore, at Gilnow we want our children to be able to independently develop their creativity, reflect, analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others. Different parts of the learning process will be clear and evident in sketch books, following a research, plan (teach the specific skill), draft (practice) and design (end-product) sequence of learning. Learning may be delivered in weekly lessons or ‘blocked’ periods of work, but will allow for revisiting and application of prior learning as well as new learning. Here at Gilnow, we want our children to relish art as a root of enjoyment presently and as coming artists.
Curriculum Impact
Our Art curriculum is designed to a high quality to equip our children with that special finesse and flair and instil an appreciation and enjoyment of art. On-going assessments take place every lesson using our unit overview document, whereby teachers can assess children’s understanding and inform future lessons. This assures that teachers can address any gaps and ensure children are supported and challenged appropriately. At the end of a unit, teachers make informed judgements about the children’s learning and progress made over time based on our progression of skills document, which is presented onto a tracker.
