EYFS Reading

READING

Phonics

In Nursery, we will be having daily group time for early phonics and reading. This will take the form of short stories, singing rhymes, identifying sounds, playing with instruments, matching sounds and other listening activities.

In Reception, our focus is on the initial letter sounds (Phase 1 Phonics) which will help to develop our first reading skills. Children will begin with the sounds ‘s’ ‘a’ ‘t’ ‘p’ ‘i’ ‘n’ ‘m’ ‘d’.

Nursery, Book Time

Every Thursday morning at 8:55 we would like parents to come into nursery with their child to choose a book to borrow and share at home. This can be brought back the next Thursday to swap for another book.

Please make the effort to support your child’s enjoyment of books, as this helps with their early learning of reading – listening to, answering questions about and sharing books together!

Reading in Reception

Every child in Reception will receive a book bag, reading diary and reading book following our ‘Reading at Gilnow’ welcome meeting in the Autumn term. Each child will also have the chance to choose a library book each week, fostering a love for reading.

Children should bring their home reading diaries and books to school every day. Reading is such an important part of learning that we strongly encourage reading at home as often as possible.

5 minutes a day can make a big difference. Within school we read daily and children have continuous access to books and reading materials, in addition to daily Phonic sessions.

Add comments in their reading record and sign to show you have supported them at home. All children are expected to read 3 times a week at home to their parents. There will be prizes at the end of each half term for children who have read regularly at home.
